New art is finally up, and I'm LOVING it!

I purchased this sign right around Christmas, and last night made the decision on which wall I wanted it to adorn! It now hangs in our great room, and adds lots of needed character.

I have purchased a few different trays and plates from Home Goods to hang, and the tray above fits perfectly.

This sign is so well made. The saying makes me happy, and reminds me of our family's many blessings. I am blessed to have them in my life.

Crafting A Little Valentine's Cheer

I realized I really don't have Valentine's decorations at my house except for some glittered hearts that I seldom seem to bring out. It was time to get crafty!

Here is the first Valentine's vingette in our house. I made the "XO" art, and the plate of yarn balls. Pretty much a subtle nod to the holiday.

For my first project I used some of the yarn balls I made at Christmas, and then added many more small yarn balls. I like the mix of the soft pink and cream with the bright pink.

I added a couple of little touches - this heart was cut out of some glitter ribbon. It is attached to the yarn ball with a sequin pin.

And here is the butterfly ball I created at Christmas from French book pages using a butterfly punch.

So, yarn balls placed together, simply embellished. I think adding them to this vintage plate really pulls it all together.

The piece of art was quick and easy. I chose a X and O from my letter set - they fit perfectly on the $1 canvas found at Michael's last year. I just put a little piece of tape on the back of each letter so it won't be a problem to remove them later. I'm not sure if you can tell in the photo, but the decoration on the canvas is flocked. It gives the canvas more interest and dimension.

Hopefully I will come up with more Valentine's touches for around the house. I have a couple things in mind so it will just be a matter of taking the time, and putting my ideas together to see if they work.

Another Really Good Blueberry Cake - Buttermilk Blueberry Breakfast Cake!

Olioboard for Noah's Room

We have been working (procrastinating) on Noah's room for awhile now. We chose paint colors this summer, and ordered the desk below.

I used Olioboard this past week to create this mood board. This is my first attempt at making a mood board. Olioboard was easy to use. I would recommend it. I tried another companies to start, but had lots of problems.

It is so nice to see everything for Noah's room in one place. It is also easier for my boys to visualize what I am thinking, and how it will actually look. I am amazingly getting some positive feedback for once. It is also nice because anything they don't like can be easily deleted and changed around.

Noah's walls are painted Peppercorn and his ceiling is Sea Salt - both by Sherwin Williams. We had one wall painted in chalkboard paint, but the painters decided to cut corners so they have to come back and fix it.

So, we already own the dresser, bed, nightstand, and glass cabinet. The glass cabinet he has is really similar to the one above - no shelves on the bottom though, and the legs look more like a nice wooden carved table. I purchased in on clearance from Anthropologie a few years back. He has the depot light from Pottery Barn, but my husband keeps insisting that we get a ceiling fan with a light. I think I am going to lose the battle. He has a green fan he likes just fine, but ... I am going to lose the battle. I think the one I found above is not too bad. I wish someone would make a depot looking ceiling fan. That would be great!

We are going to use all the same bedding. It is bright and cheerful. He chose the bright plaid years ago for the shams. The quilt is a light gray t-shirt like material. His sheets are white with chocolate brown stitching. He also has a grain sack looking pillow with red striping.

He need a desk/guitar playing chair, and he liked this charcoal gray one I found. It even has rolling wheels!

As for the walls - he thinks the frog is "beast" and even Josh loved it. We will hang his guitars on the wall, and he has wanted the Whippet art for some time. I'm not sure what we will do with the window. The boys don't really like the idea of drapes - so maybe a simple little valence.

Anyhow, that is where we are in the planning. Hopefully we will get it all together soon for a real reveal!

I am loving the above leg warmers from Grace and Lace. What a great way to have a little ruffle show above tall boots! I had wanted some ruffle socks, but haven't been able to find any. Now I just have to decide which color I will get the most use out of.

I couldn't resist this hand cut Whippet silhouette from Eliza B Crafts. It has been mounted onto a book page found in a vintage dog book. A fun way to add a little history and whimsy to the house. She creates her little works of art in all different breeds!

This adorable wreath in everyday colors is made of 80 to 85 hand needle-felted balls. Made by my friend Amanda - I believe she will also do custom orders. She also makes adorable ornaments using this same process.

I'm going to work on mood boards for Josh and Noah's bedrooms - there will be a few works of art I found on Etsy added to those (if I figure it out) plus some drapes I'm liking. Last week all I managed to do blog wise was create a new header. It was really needed, and I'm liking it much better. Other than that I think I had bloggers block.

Meat Spaghetti Sauce Made With Half a Stick of Butter! Oh so-ooo good!

This is a recipe originally found by my mom. My sister told me it was fantastic, and sent me the recipe.

It is so good that my oldest - a boys who dislikes spaghetti - asked me if I could make the spaghetti again. It was shocking that he was asking for spaghetti, and also surprising since it had only been a week since we last enjoyed it.

My very favorite way to enjoy this spaghetti is with the ground tenderloin that the butcher gives us. He makes it from the trimmings when you buy a whole tenderloin - you get 2 pounds ground along with your tenderloin. I'm going to have to ask if they ever have this to sell if one randomly "needs" some.

So, here is the recipe. It is super simple and satisfying!

To make the sauce:

Melt 1/2 stick of butter in a large frying pan

Add 1 small diced onion and 1/2 tsp. minced garlic and saute until golden

Add 1 pound of ground round and brown

Add 1 tsp. salt and 1/2 tsp. pepper

Add one 15 oz. can of tomato sauce

Add one 6 oz. can of tomato paste

Add one 6 oz. tomato paste can full of water

Add 1 tsp. sugar and 1/2 tsp. oregano

Simmer for about 2 hours (I haven't waited that long)

A New Year - New Possibilities - Thankfulness

I am considering today as the official start to my new year. The day to start accomplishing things. A fresh start.

We really enjoyed Christmas, and really kept it very casual after.

I did take the boys to Kalahari after Christmas with 3 of their friends. I had some really good laughs this holiday break. The laugh until you cry kind of laughs that I love! Some courtesy of their friends. Can you imagine pulling two hard solid wood dining room chairs together and using them as your bed for the night? No pillow - no blanket. When I woke up in the morning at Kalahari, and came out of my room the living room area was one of the funniest sights I have seen, and this is just how I found one of Noah's friends sleeping. I was trying to take pictures, but the lighting was dim - anyhow the 3 in the living room ended up being awakened by my laugh. I tried really hard to contain it, but it was kind of like being in a class where you shouldn't laugh so you are trying so hard not too. Such a funny sight! His friend told me that he and the floor had a bad history. I forgot to ask him later what the history was. This boy is so darn funny. One of the funniest people I know.

I am also sure that we experienced divine intervention on the way home. We were on the Ohio turnpike, and I had the feeling that I should take it slow. No one was behind me so I really took my time. When I reached the top of the turnpike it was like we were on a rollercoaster and heading up a hill - concrete on both sides - just a narrow lane to travel - and you couldn't see where you were headed. I drive a Jeep which is higher, but I still could not see what was ahead. I slowed even more, and just had a funny feeling. Next thing to happen is that I have a car in the lane I am in heading straight for me. A elderly man was driving and he was angry and yelling at me. By this time I drove my Jeep to the left where there was a couple of feet of cement. At this point I am thinking that I know it was very clear that I was supposed to head up the way I had. There was no way I was going to get back in that lane at that moment, and cross over the bridge with no visibility so I turned the Jeep around on the concrete and started heading down the other side of the road. Next thing we see is a mini van heading up the road the same way we had, and the old man heading straight for them. When we got down to the bottom again the old man had stopped in a grassy median and was sitting there. When he saw us he went in front of us, and went on his "merry" way. We started back up the road as we first had - made it over the bridge - and then just wondered how that man got to our side of the road. Really scary, and I am so very thankful that this is the story I have to tell. Thank God.

Dining Room Table - Simple Holiday Centerpiece

I kept our table really simple.

A wooden trug filled with little treasures decorates the tabletop this year.

I just grabbed some items that were not being used on the tree.

I made the pom pom and this little ball with butterflies. I love how this turned out!

The same candles that pretty much rest here all year long finish it off.

I'm wondering what I will put in those little compartments next?

Our Merry Front Room Tree and Wrapping

A little more holiday - I am so behind in posting. I apologize if you are tired of Christmas, but I have a little left to share. This is our front room tree - the kid tree - full of Shiny Brite ornaments, handmade treasures, and transportation ornaments. I will pretty much just let the pictures do the talking.

The only new wrap I purchased this year was the green wrap. Other than that I focused on using what I had at the house. I have had the little house boxes for a few years now. They are actually favor boxes, but I think they are really cute as gift boxes. I also used yarn again this year as ribbon. I love how it looks, and the yarn goes such a long way!

Unique Holiday Songs from A Fine Frenzy, My Fave - Ingrid Michaelson, & She and Him - Plus a Favorite Chosen By J and N

Hello. I didn't want the holiday season to pass by without mentioning a couple of CD's that I truly enjoy. Not your typical songs - I bought the Fine Frenzy - Oh Blue Christmas CD - on a whim a couple of years ago at Target. This CD is quite catchy and finds it way into my player quite often. I had a hard time choosing which song to share, but settled on Redribbon Foxes.

And, of course, Miss Ingrid. She now has a digital 4 song Christmas CD titled Snowfall. Here is a song she sings with Sara Bareilles called Winter Song (not included in Snowfall - I just like it).

I've also been enjoying the She and Him holiday music.

Lastly, my boys are really getting a kick out of this:

It has been their fave song this season, and showing them the old school video made it that much more appealing. They find it funny, but good, and I enjoy the lip synching session that occurs each time the song makes it on the radio.

Great Room Tree Details & Ruffle Book Page Garland Tutorial

Hello again! This week has gotten away from me. Just finishing up shopping and wrapping.

I made some new garland for our tree this year, and have been meaning to post about it for some time now. I thought I would try a video post, but I can see now that is just not going to happen at the moment. Maybe in the future I'll come back to it and give it a try.

I was working on an idea for a tree topper, and this garland just happened. As you can see I still don't have a topper. Maybe next year!

To make the garland I used my largest dictionary and cut each sheet into strips.

I first made ruffles with just the book pages, but it was a little too plain.

I had some black seam binding, and using it down the center made all the difference.

Just center the seam binding on top of your book page. Grab your sewing machine, and start sewing. I just pushed on the paper and ribbon so it would scrunch up as it went through the machine. As you reach the end of a paper strip overlap the next strip slightly so you just keep creating one continuous strip. The ruffles are not perfect and uniform, and they look really nice despite their imperfection.

of Santa ornaments that I have stitched up over the years.

There are a few paper ornaments on the tree as well.

With all of the Santa ornaments the tree really needs the shine and sparkle of the glass ornaments.

There are also ornaments that were on my tree growing up.

Santa and his sleigh is one of my favorite old ornaments as is that turtle.

I still have two more trees to share.

Holiday Mantle Detail Day - With 3 Tutorials!

Happy Wednesday!

I really wanted to focus on using things that we already owned to decorate our mantle this year so purchasing anything new was kept to a minimum.

Happily, that idea worked out. It was fun as well because I had to put on my thinking cap, and be creative. Once I started crafting I really didn't want to stop.

I cross-stitched the stockings for my boys when they were babies. J was still in my belly when I stitched his! I just had to wait to stitch on his name. I had a seamstress make them into the actual stockings. I chose natural denim for the lining and used blue ticking on the backsides and hangers. The trim is a varigated green. The stocking patterns are from Shepherd's Bush.

I am loving my new yarn ball garland. I had some yarn scraps here, and then purchased a few more colors at the craft store. I just tried to think of what colors would be fun with the stockings. So enjoyable to make, and it adds so much cheer to our room. The yarn ball garland is a truly great addition to our house, and with my love of knitting quite fitting as well.

I used 2 inch diameter styrofoam balls - wrapping them with yarn until they were fully covered. The layers hold in that starting yarn so you really don't have to secure it. You can if you wish, but really not neccessary. When the balls were covered I used a sequin pin to pin the end in place. A very light dab of glue might also work well, but I'm not planning on being rough with them, and if they unravel it is an easy fix with the pin.

I chose a cute green and white striped string to attach them to. You have to use a really big upholstry needle. I tied a little knot - strung on a yarn ball - tied another knot. This will keep them from moving around. They might not move around, but I figured - why chance it. Then I just evenly spaced them and repeated the knot, stringing one on, and another knot until it was complete.

I have to give a very big thank you to Courtney who writes the Little Glass Box blog. She is so crafty and was my inspiration for this project. This idea and the instructions came straight from her adorable creations! If you haven't visited her blog yet it is a must see! She has so many unique and whimsical projects.

Extra yarn balls look like little snowballs. I'm going to make a few more in larger sizes to place here and there. The squirrel ornament is from Michaels.

Next up - the wreath. This had been a slightly sad looking little wreath. It has been hanging on my garage door for years - it wore this same ribbon, and had red berries tucked in. I was really tired of looking at it.

I found the little bird ornament last year while out doing random shopping. I cannot get enough of the color of the ribbon and pipe cleaner on the bird!

I had some muslin sitting in the office, and thought it would complement the new yarn creations. I grabbed some of my letters, and the muslin and made it work! I tore the muslin into strips. I cut one of the strips into smaller pieces - slipping one end of the small piece into the hole in the letters and then tying the letters onto the larger strip - evenly spacing them. Once I had the word finished I just attached it to the wreath by tucking the ends of the muslin into the wreath twigs. I like how the bird says Merry Christmas and I wrote out merry. I didn't notice that until I was looking at the photo's.

The mercury glass bowl is filled with more yarn balls and penguins from Michaels. I wasn't going to purchase any new ornaments this year, but could not resist the little bottle brush animal ornaments. I am still trying to find the deer.

Lastly, project #3 - I wrapped my pinwheel bouquet with wide strips of muslin. The original family band is hidden underneath. To see the original pinwheel tutorial and vase click here.

To cover a vase with muslin strips just tear out your strips and start wrapping them around the vase. Your first end will just be tucked under the overlapping layers and will stay put. When you get to the end of a strip simply take the next strip and tie the ends together. They form a really pretty knot. I just kept adding strips until the vase was covered the way I liked.

I never imagined that I would be using so much muslin in my decorating. That is the fun part of using things that you have on hand to create. Things just happen. One idea leads to another. I also started making an ornament using muslin. It's not finished yet.

The mercury glass ball was in our garden this summer. Now the pair of them are decorating the inside for Christmas.

A Glimpse of our Holiday House - The Great Room

Hello!

Here is a little look at our holiday house!

My Christmas gift has been installed - finally fire in the fireplace. We are LOVING it! It makes the room feel so cozy. I spent a little time last Sunday cleaning out the fireplace, and giving it a fresh coat of fireproof paint. So excited to have it freshened and finished before Christmas day.

I will show you what I decorated the mantle with in another post this week, and I'll visit some other rooms. I had lots of fun being crafty last week, and also have a couple of original projects to share, and some other fun touches I created.

There is a little peek at our new cabinet that rests under our t.v.

A little vignette. The pom pom on the left was on a Christmas gift I recevied from my sister a couple of years ago. I made the one on the right last week.

Anthropologie Inspired Paper Trees

While enjoying some lunch and shopping my friend Karen and I spotted the most adorable paper trees at Anthropologie. Adorable and expensive. Then and there we decided we needed to have a craft night so last week that is exactly what we did! Here is a photo of our finished product! When my oldest saw mine he said it looks like something I would have bought. Karen's boys thought hers was really neat too! I guess we impressed ourselves and our boys that night!

Things you will need:

wooden base found at craft store - we used one in the shape of a square

wood dowel - 3/16 diameter

glue gun

old book or sheet music

cardboard or chipboard - we bought a pack of chipboard sheets at Joann Fabrics. The pack contained natural chipboard color, white, and black.

paper cutter with a deckle blade and a straight blade

The first thing you might want to get ready are your papers. We used a paper cutter with a deckle blade. Once all your papers are cut use a sharp object to punch a little hole in the center of the square. This makes it easy to slide the paper on the dowel. For example, we used a metal shish kebob skewer. A little tear in the center is all you need.

Here are the paper sizes and quantities that we ended up using for our 13 inch tree.

24 - 5 inch squares

15 - 4 1/2 inch squares

15 - 4" squares

15 - 3 1/2" squares

12 - 3" squares

10 - 2 1/2 inch squares

10 - 2 inch squares

12 - 1 1/2 inch squares

10 to 15 - 1 inch squares

You will also need to make a whole bunch of spacers - you will use them between each piece of paper. Near the bottom of our trees where the paper pieces were larger we used one inch sizes. The larger size also helps the papers sit more straightly. I'm not sure if that makes sense - it just gives the paper more to rest on. As you work up the tree your spacers need to become much smaller so they don't stick out from the decorative pages. At the treetop you basically will be trimming around your paper punched circle. See tiny pieces to the right in the photo. We just made a big bunch of these. We used the straight blade for the paper cutter to cut strips of chipboard, and then punched the holes and cut the individual pieces with scissors.

We cut our dowel so that our final height with the base included would measure 13 inches. We simply attached the dowel to our board with hot glue and 2 of the chipboard pieces with hot glue. We held it until it dried and it seemed quite secure. Each layer of paper will need two pieces of chipboard between them. Begin your tree with two chipboard pieces, then 1 sheet paper, then 2 chipboard and just keep going. Note: It would probably be a good idea to just drill a hole in the wooden base, dab on some hot glue and then attach them that way. I'm thinking that is how I will do it next time.

Stack, stack, stack. Make sure to alternate the directions of your papers so you get that full tree look.

When you reach the top of your tree it will need a little topper. You can be creative and use whatever you like - I had some tiny vintage ornaments laying around so we used them.

A dab of hot glue is all you need. We also removed its little hook. I love how this finished the trees so nicely.

Then all that is left to do is admire your work and find the perfect resting spot!

Oh, you can also relish in the thought that you just saved yourself an entire 50 dollars!

Quinoa Salad with Pears, Baby Spinach and Chick Peas in a Maple Vinaigrette

A salad so unique and so delicious.

It's so good I forgot to even mention how healthy it is.

I ran across a blog last week and found myself instantly smitten.

Mouthwatering recipes ... stunning food photography ... (it's really hard to take good food photos)

Take a look - this blog won't disappoint!

I can't wait to try more of her recipes, and she also has the most gorgeous looking e-cookbook.

So, simply put, I love this salad.

The recipe calls for pears or she says you can use apples. I didn't have any pears - had an apple. I tried one bite with the apple, but enjoyed it much more without any fruit. I couldn't stop refilling my plate!

I also used a little bit more of the chick peas and the toasted pecans. I did not use any fresh parsley. This is the type of recipe that you can kind of customize to your liking.

Lastly, when I made this salad I followed the directions under the NOTE area.

Quinoa Salad with Pears, Baby Spinach and Chick Peas

in a Maple Vinaigrette

1 cup organic quinoa

sea salt

2 good handfuls of organic baby spinach leaves, washed, drained

1 large ripe pear, washed, stemmed and cored, cut into pieces

1/2 cup chilled chick peas, rinsed, drained

2 tablespoons fresh chopped parsley

sea salt and ground pepper, to taste

A handful of pecans, pan toasted and salted to taste

For the Maple Vinaigrette Dressing:

4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

3 tablespoons golden balsamic vinegar

2 tablespoons pure maple syrup

Place the quinoa in a saucepan or a rice cooker. Add 2 cups fresh water, and a pinch of sea salt. Cover and cook on a low simmer until all the water is evaporated and the quinoa is tender - roughly 20 minutes. Fluff with a fork and place it into a large salad bowl. Add the baby spinach, pear, chick peas, and chopped parsley to the quinoa and fluff.

Whisk together the vinaigrette, pour it over the quinoa salad and toss gently to coat. Season to taste with sea salt and pepper.

Just before serving, add the toasted pecans and lightly combine.

Makes 4 main course servings, six side dish servings.

Note: if you are making this salad ahead of time, make the quinoa, fluff, and add the dressing while it is warm. When it has cooled to room temperature, add in the spinach, chick peas and parsley; toss, cover and chill. Before serving add the pears and toasted pecans. Taste test and add more seasoning if needed.

2011 Chrsitmas Party Invites

This years invites are finished and delivered!

I have really loved using old book pages in projects this year. I like them so much I used them to create our Christmas invitations.

I started by cutting out a bunch of circles using book pages, paper, and tissue. Then just layered them up, and secured each of them with a brad.

I printed out the invites using gray ink - then I thought navy would be a great compliment.

The invite still needed a little something more. The red and white striped bakers twine was in my ribbon box - and since it reminded me of candy canes, hot cocoa, and Christmas why not use it as the perfect addition.

When I'm making a whole bunch of invites I like to treat it as a production line - cut everything that has to be cut and then assemble, assemble, assemble!

I used the tape runner to secure the navy ribbon.

Next, I placed a large adhesive dot on top of the ribbon.

The bakers twine was then set on the dot.

Lastly, I pushed the little circle into the adhesive dot.

Piles all ready.

We try to incorporate giving to others in need into our party. We like to focus on a local charity. This year we have chosen Forgotten Harvest. They are my favorite food bank charity around! They are Detroit's only food rescue operation, and that helps make each donation go so much farther than the traditional food bank charity. 5 meals for every dollar!

Invites were tucked into red lined envelopes.

Because of the embellishment I have the post office hand cancel the stamp - it keeps the invite out of the machines which could punch a hole in your envelope and tear things up.

Here are some general notes I made about the invite. It's a good way to refresh my memory.

I made this up quick so you can see all of the text.

A couple of my favorites - this one happened to have the words frostbite, frosty - very wintery! I randomly pulled out pages so you never know what you will get. I also scanned them quickly just to make sure there wasn't anything inappropriate in the text. There was one I had to pitch!

This is the gift we gifted to all the little girls last year.

The first part of the gift was the little burlap bag everything was tucked into.

I tend to really like to find gifts that are simple, useful, and easy to find a home for after the holidays are over.

I try to shop with those 3 goals in mind.

What was to be found inside that useful little package?

First, my very favorite shower product - Whipped Clean Body Wash!

I purchase this on Etsy from a shop called Gudonya Too!

My very favorite scent is the Italian Lemon Cream - it smells like you are enveloped inside a lemon meringue pie. The scent is very subtle. They also have other scents perfect for little girls - cotton candy, raspberry lemonade, strawberry fields, and many, many more. I really cannot say enough good things about this Whipped Clean Body Wash. Each girl also got a colorful bath poof to use in the shower with their new scents. The other item I thought was really adorable are leg/arm warmers. They are also an Etsy find - The store is called Mama Runs With Scissors.

When the kids are little they can wear them as leg warmers, but as they grow they become arm warmers. That way the kids can still enjoy a short sleeve t-shirt, and add some arms for warmth and style.

The leg/arm warmers come in all kinds of patterns - I purchased 4 different styles last year. They also have designs for the little men in your life. To see all of the different styles click here. They also have cute little sets with matching tutu's.

I still have to finish my shopping for this years girl gift. I found one very girly item, useful and easy to put away plus it is adorable! Now I have to find something more to add to it. How is your holiday shopping going? I have a little bit finished, but have been concentrating more on decorating the house. Two trees finished and the third almost done!

Thanksgiving Table

We enjoyed a very nice Thanksgiving with family and friends.

Noah gave a well very thought out blessing along with a list of things he was thankful for.

Our meal was delicious and traditional.

I had sweet little visitors who completely enjoyed making crafts. They went home with bunches of handmade ornaments for their tree!

I wasn't going to post about the Thanksgiving table - I figure you might be tired of seeing me set a table time and time again.

After I set the table using things I already owned I thought it was simply very nice so I took a few photos, and here it is.

The napkins are Ikea towels. The nest napkin holders have been used many times since I made them for Karen's party.

I have had the morrocan type candleholders for many years. This summer Target had the mercury glass holders in the same colors so I bought a few. I think that was the Calypso line.

I made the card with the saying and used leaves I had in my cupboard from way back when Thomas O'Brien had stationary and paper goods at Target. I love those little leaves!

Drinking cups are handblown glass - clearance from Stonewall kitchen - also years ago. I so wish I ordered 2 sets.

I Ended Up Making a Cute Cake!

Josh's school had their holiday bazaar Saturday so I made a bunch of bake sale goodies, and a cake for the cake walk. I quickly baked this cake in the morning. It was nice enough, but needed a little something to make it more special!

I ran downstairs to see what I could make from what I already owned. The butterfly stickers were laying on the back desk so I grabbed them and attached them to toothpicks and skewers. Then I made a little bunting that says - love who you are.

As I was carrying the cake out of the house I caught a glance in the mirror and noticed it looked really cute in front of my blush pink dress and denim jacket. (I am loving wearing dresses over skinny jeans with boots - topped with a cardigan or denim jacket) I posted this cake for about 20 minutes Saturday night, but I didn't like my photo's. I then remembered that my friend Mie took a picture while I was holding the cake. She texted it to me so here it is! And yes, I meant to not frost the sides. For some odd reason I like to leave the sides bare.

Saturday was a very busy, but fun day!

Noah had his first basketball game that evening, and they won so that was nice.

I'll return in a day or so with my latest party invites. Today I am just working around the house - laundry, cleaning up papers off of tabletops, cleaning the desk off, and putting ornaments on the mancave tree. I think I'm going to make a coffee cake too! Hopefully I'll make a good dent! Please excuse my random chatter.

Sloppy Joes with Maui Onion Straws

I tried a new recipe last week that I absolutely have to share with you. Amazing Sloppy Joes. The best I have ever made or eaten! I followed this recipe from the very talented Guy Fieri. I only changed 2 things - I used half the amount of cayenne pepper, and I didn't toast the rolls. The first night we ate them I didn't make the onions - they were fantastic. The next night I had time to make the onions - they were fantastic again. The perfect recipe for some super flavorful comfort food!

T = tablespoon t = teaspoon

Sloppy Joes with Maui Onion Straws

For the Sloppy Joes:

1/4 c. canola oil
1 red bell pepper, seeded and diced
1 green bell pepper, seeded and diced
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded, deveined and diced
1 red onion, diced
1 pound ground pork
1 pound ground beef
2 T. minced garlic
1/4 c. red wine
1/4 c. red wine vinegar
1 t. cayenne pepper
1 T. paprika
1 t. ground cumin
1 t. dry mustard
1 6 ounce can tomato paste
1 1/2 cups tomato sauce
3 T. packed brown sugar
1/4 c. Worcestershire sauce
kosher or sea salt and pepper
24 sweet Hawaiian rolls

For the Onion Straws:
2 c. canola oil
1 large egg
1/2 c. milk
2 c. all-purpose flour
1 t. cayenne pepper
1 t. paprika
1 t. garlic powder
kosher or sea salt and pepper
1 sweet onion (Maui or Vidalia)

Directions:
Prepare the sloppy joes: In a large saute pan over medium-high heat, combine the canola oil, bell peppers, jalapeno and onion; cook for 5 minutes. Add the beef and pork; cook thoroughly, breaking up the meat as it browns. Add the garlic. Depending on the amount of residual grease, you may need to drain some of the fat from the pan. Deglaze with the red wine, then stir in the remaining sloppy joe ingredients (except the rolls) and season with 1 T. each salt and pepper. Reduce the heat and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes. If the sauce gets too thick as it simmers, add up to 1 cup water to adjust the consistency. Toast the rolls and set aside.

Meanwhile, prepare the onion straws: In medium sauce pot, heat the oil to 350 degrees. Whisk the egg and milk in a medium bowl. Mix the flour, cayenne pepper, paprika, garlic powder, 1 T. salt and 1 t. pepper in another medium bowl. Cut the onion in half, then slice into 1 inch thick half rings; separate into short straw-like pieces. Add to the milk mixture to soak.

Once the oil is hot enough, remove the onions from the milk mixture, shake off excess and dredge in the flour mixture, 4 or 5 pieces at a time. Add to the pot and fry until golden brown; transfer to paper towels to drain.

Serve the sloppy joes on the toasted rolls and top with onion straws.

Random Things I'm Liking ...

Made cupcakes for the school bake sale - LOVE the cupcake liners. They are green and brown - once baked the liner has an adorable brown dotted stripe around the upper edge. They are from Michaels - Paula Deen.

Anthropologie - little ikat bowl. Great to give as gifts. They are the perfect size to hold jewelry by the sink. Someone on my Christmas list is receiving one as part of their gift ...

This is my new bracelet and looking back I wish I had bought all 3 they had. Would have made super great gifts as well. I love mine. I wore it on Halloween with my owl ring. I also wore a black cardigan, my J. Crew ruffled tank, jeans, and one of my favorite pairs of shoes. Made for a nice simple outfit.

Here are the shoes - bargain of the century. 2 summers ago I went into DSW looking for a pair of shoes. I can't remember what I was exactly looking for, but I know I didn't find them. I decided to take a quick look in the clearance section. That is where I found this pair - calf hair - Stuart Weitzman - box was marked at almost $400 smackaroo's - I walked out with them for $35 dollars. They are comfy and look cute with my denim and anything else I put with them. That was a lucky day! Have you ever heard of DSW selling that high end of a brand. I still wonder what they were doing there?

This is the top I mentioned. I have gotten so much wear out of this & it washes up just like new - J. Crew did well here - I should have gotten the gray one too.

Lastly, something I have been swooning over for months, and didn't buy. Sadly that great burnt orange top looks like it's sold out. I L-O-V-E the sweater and top color combination. Just last year I started wearing some combinations that didn't exactly go together, and I really liked it. For example, one was a olive green sweater with a coral silk top. Think a little Punky Brewster without the primary colors. Oh, and jeans of course. Nothing too crazy!

Thanks for reading all my rambling. Life has been busy here - good busy, but busy. I'm working on my Christmas party invites right now. I needed a break so posting was a very enjoyable distraction. Halloween House Photo's - The Daylight Hours

I wanted to share a few more photo's of our Halloween decorations.

Target - Missoni score. The day after what sounded like a crazy shopping morning at Target I was doing my normal Target shopping and they had a fair amount of Missoni out. Maybe they were late shipments or something. I picked up this 3 piece platter because it reminded me of a spiders web - and also because I have black and creamy white trays I like to use at Christmas. I figured it would be a pretty useful piece.

The candles have a spot for tea lights and they have the best nighttime glow. I put them on the desk so that they could be seen through the front window.

Hope everyone has a great Thursday. I'm off to make some bake sale treats, and work on cleaning things up around here, and on that never ending laundry pile! I wonder if when I was growing up I wore 2 to 3 outfits a day. I don't think I did. My oldest wears a outfit to school, changes at least the bottoms when he gets home, and then puts on something else new after his shower before bed. My youngest sometimes has days like that, but those are usually his sports days so it depends on the season. It could be worse - at least they like to be clean. Laundry doesn't really bother me - just takes time.

Is Anyone watching The X Factor? I think Drew needs to make a CD pronto - what a beautiful voice that talented young lady has. I'm in awe, and I adore that she is so real - so grounded - such an adorable and unpretentious teen.

OK - I have to go now before I continue with another random thought!

Halloween Night

Hope everyone enjoyed Halloween. Here is my little candy helper. She would much rather help by eating the candy, but was happy enough seeing what was happening at the door. Josh and Noah both had friends over so we had 8 boys total. I made pizza to look like candy corn when sliced, mummy hot dogs, and a vegetable skeleton guy. We finished the meal with cider and cinnamon donuts from the cider mill.

Our front door opens up to the closet. The plain boring closet. I am not sure what the builder was thinking. Halloween morning I decided I better put together something so that when the door opened there would be something interesting to look at. This is what I quickly came up with.

I used my rummage sale plate, and some battery operated votive holders that I crafted up back in April. I just added a glittering spider sticker. I keep meaning to blog about them and will soon.

This pumpkin guy on a big crow is probably my favorite decoration.

The only new purchases I made for Halloween this year were the spider stickers and the black crow paper silhouettes.

This abracadabra sign took me about 2 minutes total to make. I used a empty frame that is only halfway through the painting process. If I remember right it used to be black and gold. I decided to try to keep some of the gold, and was actually thinking of painting over it, but now I think I may like it this way. A happy accident! I like the sign so much I'm going to make one for Thanksgiving, and then a different version for Christmas. I just have to choose my words.

I'm still going to post a few more photo's of our house with the Halloween decorations. There will also be a little peak at the hallway

Rummage Sales Finds & A Winner!

I'm just popping in really quick today - I have lots to get ready for Halloween tonight. A bunch of boys are heading over after school - lots of fun to be had - including visiting the haunted house garage down the street. We have one house that really goes the extra mile in decorating. Our boys are excited to take their friends this year.

I found a couple of neat items at the rummage sale last week.

The plan is to hang this on the wall. Love the pale green and brown on this plate.

Lastly, this super cool yellow teacup and saucer.

Captivating House & Last Day To Enter Shabby Apple Giveaway!

This is a post about one of those houses.

Do you know the kind of house I'm talking about. You pass by them year upon year. You wonder who lives in them. You wonder how the rooms are laid out - how they are decorated. Basically, you love them and are just dying to know what is inside.

I have passed by this house my entire life. When I was little it was the highlight of going to the pediatrician's office. It has always happily worn yellow shutters, and the giant iron flower holder you see has always been in that very spot on the front lawn.

I went to a church rummage sale last week with my friends Karen and Suzanne. On the way home we passed this house, and Karen pointed out that it was for sale. She had been looking around on a real estate website days before and there it was. She was shocked it was for sale as well. It is a favorite of hers too!

I came home that night and had to look up the house. I would finally be able to see what was inside. Lucky for you - you haven't had to wait all your life to see it all. It needs LOTS of work and love, but I am sure someone will make this into their home sweet home. I wish it could be me. The house is located in downtown Birmingham - a super walkable location - the downfall is that it is on the corner of 2 main streets. Just not the location I would want for our family.

The great room. Lots of windows. Looks like there is some detail on the walls. A nice updated mantle and some wood floors would make a huge difference - along with paint and some great new furniture.

I'm thinking that kitchen table and chairs look pretty special. Otherwise, I would love to see an amazing kitchen in this space. This house was built in 1840 - it is believed to be the second oldest house in Birmingham. The last makeover it received was in 1959.

Looks like another place to eat. This may be the second enclosed porch.

This is the enclosed porch at the front right side of the home. The windows always caught my attention - it's fun to see what has been behind them all of these years, even if it isn't as spectacular as my imagination had made it out to be. Can you imagine it painted - that wooden ceiling would be so nice in a blue like the color on that bench by the brick wall. Neat bench.

Backyard. I love it too! Looks much more farmhouse like to me.

The lot is a double lot which is a plus. At least there is lots of space in the backyard!

This sale is an estate sale and the price just keeps dropping. Birmingham is a very desirable city to live in. Housing in Michigan is down - on one site this home is listed at 225,000 and I found it on another listed at 200,000. Needs love, but is a MAJOR bargain. Just a few years ago it's value was at 500,000.

6 bedrooms, 4 baths, 3239 square feet, and loads of potential!

When it sells, and I pass by I will just have to imagine that the new owners are making amazing changes inside! The wonder will continue! I just really hope they keep those yellow shutters and that iron flower holder. That's where some of the magic lives!

A Christmas Gift Idea & A Neat Dictionary

Just thought I'd pop in and share a couple more details in the great room.

I think that this pillow would make such a fantastic Christmas gift for any family on your list. My mom purchased one for my brothers famly - he has four kids. His pillow has a number four, and then all of the kids names which came out just perfectly. You can find and customize your own pillows at Shop 24 on Etsy.

One last little thing for now - this was my Grandma's Reader's Digest dictionary. Do you see the embossed alphabet on the cover? I just love it's charm.

A Little Fall In The Corner Cabinet

Finally - a post for the week. My husband had knee surgery Tuesday so it has been busy around here.

I had a minute so I am throwing this together.

Last weekend the corner cabinet in our great room got a little freshening up for Fall. I want to paint out that wood to a creamy white so bad - I'm hoping to try out some chalk paint!!!

We already owned everything except the silhouette plates. They are from a company called Fringe.

I guess the little footed piece of silver on the bottom shelf is new too. I picked that up at Goodwill in Ann Arbor last week. I sent a text to my friend Noelle after I left Goodwill to apologize for breaking one of her Christmas gifts. I had found the most adorable little Paris plate I thought she would really like, and sadly it slid off my pile and broke. I'm still bummed about that. I have some photo's to share of my time in Ann Arbor, but that will have to wait until next week.

I really like the text on each plate.

The green and brown in front of the plate is just a candle laying on it's side.

This is the other way I use my hardware store numbers.

#1 use is on the mancave Christmas tree.

#2 use - the number 31 for Halloween.

They are the perfect color!

I found this old crate at an Estate sale last summer.

We have lots of sports to watch this weekend - The Tigers and The Michigan - Michigan State Football game. Note: I don't want to mislead anyone - I am not a big sports watcher - I do like to follow the Tigers (though I am still bummed out about the Granderson trade and that was years ago now) I enjoy the noise of a football game, but please NEVER let me step inside the big house again. Talk about crowded! I just know that sports will be big around here this weekend in the house of boys. As for me - I just need to get to my favorite cider mill so I can enjoy cider and the most delicious cinnamon donuts I have ever found!

White Cheddar Grilled Cheese Sandwich and Pepper Gazpacho - Alternative to Tomato Soup - Great hot or cold.

How about a classic meal - with a twist?

Some nights it's nice to just make a grilled cheese sandwich with a bowl of tomato soup. The following recipes just give the old standby a new spin.

I have a couple of grilled cheese sandwiches I make, but for now here is my very basic grilled cheese. I like to buy my bread from the bakery area - rye is always a good choice. Go super light on the butter. Too much butter and your bread will just be soggy. Lastly, I like to use Vermont White Cheddar. The Hoffman brand would be my first choice. When grilling just be patient and let the bread brown really well. After the sandwich is grilled try to stand the sandwich on it's side on the plate or put it on a cooling rack so it will stay crisp.

Now here is the recipe for the Pepper Gazpacho.

1 - 46 oz. bottle vegetable juice

1 - 12 oz. jar roasted red bell peppers, drained

1 cup loosely packed fresh parsley leaves

1/2 cup chopped fresh basil leaves

1 cup chopped cucumber

1/2 cup banana pepper rings

2 garlic cloves

3 Tbsp. lemon juice

2 Tbsp. olive oil

Process half of the vegetable juice and next 7 ingredients in a blender until smooth. Transfer to a large bowl. Stir in remaining vegetable juice and olive oil. Serve immediately with toppings like sliced cucumbers and basil leaves, or cover and chill until ready to serve - and really heat it up if you'd like it warm. It works either way!

How To Make Your Own Pinwheel Bouquet

I made this project a couple of months ago - I guess it is about time I share it!

One day I decided that it would be nice to have a bouquet that would just stay nice! I really like working with old book pages, and decided that a whole bunch of pinwheels in a vase might just be the thing.

My arrangement has 42 pinwheels. 41 are made out of a 4 by 4 inch square of paper, and the embellished one is a 5 by 5 inch square. They are really easy - just sometimes a little hard to hold onto. The more you make the easier they get.

We will start with the plain pinwheels.

Using a paper cutter cut out 4 by 4 inch squares. Note: if you are using dictionary pages make sure to skim the definitions to make sure your words are alright to use.

Next, fold your square corner to corner.

Unfold and it will look like this.

On each of your fold lines using scissors make a cut 1/2 way up.

I used a 1/16" hole punch for the next step.

In the upper left corner of each triangle punch a hole. Also punch a hold in the center of the paper.

Next, get your brads ready. I found the brads I used at Michaels. They have a crystal center. I think they were about $2.

Here is where it can get a little challenging. Fold each paper punch hole one by one so that the hole lines up with your center hole. Keep gathering them up until all four points meet in the middle. They will pop out here and there. Just start again. It really does get easier to hold onto it all.

When they are all in the middle push your brad through the middle and secure it. That's it!

Now that your pinwheel is finished you need a stem. I used wooden skewers - 100 for $1. I used scissor to clip off the sharp end. Shut my eyes when I made the cut. Probably not the best method, but it worked. Safety glasses might be key.

For the larger pinwheel follow the same steps - just cut your paper into a 5 by 5 inch square to start. I added cream tissue and 2 mini cupcake liners to the top of this pinwheel. I also added a little word and a piece of ribbon. Put the ribbon and word on the backside of your pinwheel before you fasten the brad.

I left the backside of the small pinwheels plain. On this pinwheel I added a circle of book page. I secured all of the pinwheels to the skewers just like this with hot glue.

This is one of those projects that you can make any way you like - use any paper - add any word - add any color ribbon.

As for the vase - it is really 2 clear glass vases. The large vase that you see is 7 1/2 inches high by 6 1/2 inches wide. I found it at Home Goods. I think it was $7 or $8.

I added another cylinder glass vase from the dollar store to the middle. It just helps everything stand up better together. You may be able to see it through the blurry photo.

I messed around a little with different fabric scraps and ribbon, but in the end decided to make another large band for this vase. If you want directions for the burlap band please click here.

Our Fall Mantle

So, here is our Fall mantle.

I like the general look of our mantle already so I just took a few things off, switched a couple things around, and added a bit.

The eye chart and blue architectural finds stayed in place.

The books, weathered frame, and candle holder with the crystals stayed put as well.

The flower plaques were on the right side of the mantle. They were my Grandma's and when I was in grade school she gave them to me for my room. I love them to this day and they are always on display. The colors are very Fall so here they stay!

I added the golden holders to this side to play off of the burlap on the other side of the mantle.

On the right side I added my pinwheel bouquet I made awhile back. I've been meaning to blog about it - I will soon!

Of course some pumpkins. My sister gave me the little velvet pumpkins - they feel like bean bags - so fun! The "beaded" green pumpkin was found at Walmart last year. That was a crazy good find! The black and cream frame is a canvas and the black is flocking. I haven't figured out yet what I'm going to really do with them, but I actually like them just blank in this display. I found them at Michaels - $1 bin - awhile back - I picked up 3 black and then 2 that are square and flocked in charcoal gray.

Just a couple more views. I use battery operated candles on top of the finials. It makes them serve another purpose other than just being unique.

Style on a Shoestring

I've spent the last few days cleaning up our home office. 4 bags of shredded papers - now I just have to organize the cupboards and the bookshelf. While cleaning I found this article from The Detroit News that I had held on to. I just loved the story they ran on this cottage. It took a little searching since the story was from 2009, but I finally came across the photo's online so I had to show you. It's also nice because now that this is stored on my blog I can ditch some more paper. It feels so good to lighten our load around here!

I adore the exterior colors the owners chose - inspired by a box of saltwater taffy. It's a great mint shade mixed with lavender shutters and a pink bench.

The owners furnished the entire cottage for around $1000. The rattan set in this photo was a mere $50 and the beautifully colored desk with a missing drawer - $7. Toile wallpaper - $5 for a double roll at Lowe's.

The missing drawer was dressed up with a birds nest and a shell.

The look is carried through with some plates.

In the boys bedroom $40 metal beds were spayed lime green.

The kitchen's farmhouse sink - $25 score.

The dining room is furnished with a $20 patio set - cushions and all.

Old pocket watches are used to display photo's.

The cottage also has a collection of old sand pails, and this is what the owner said she spent to most on.

Just one more photo - this was in the article, but I couldn't find it online. It is the front sunroom. This room has so much character I just couldn't leave it out.

It looks like such a relaxing summer getaway, and was all designed to be kid, dog, and bathing suit proof. Lake Huron can be seen from the end of their drive. It is also so inspiring to see what can be accomplished on a very tight budget.

Dressing Up A Simple Wooden Box

Many months ago while shopping at Home Goods I spied a few of the little creamy white painted bamboo boxes below. They are kitchen utensil holders, but I thought they would make fun little storage boxes in our office. They were also on clearance for a few dollars each so why not bring them home.

I wanted to dress them up a little since they are super simple.

Inspiration found me at the craft store. Have you spotted the glitter label holders. They sell them in many shapes and glitter colors. All I did was attach them to the boxes with Elmer's glue, and let the glue dry overnight. One of the glitter holders had a little more curve to it so I just bent it a little, and sat it under some really heavy books for a few days. The weight did the trick and helped flatten it out.

The holder helps the boxes look a little more office - and the bling is a little fun. I think the holders would also be nice attached to a picture frame - below the subject. I don't even think you need to add a word label. They are pretty nice on their own. Our office shelves are in a pretty dark spot so sorry for the bad quality photos.

Remember that house from my last post? They had a bench in the upstairs hall with a pillow resting on it that I really liked. It had the silhouettes of running Whippets (or Greyhounds). Josh wants this really graphic Whippet poster for his room, and I was thinking that this fabric might be a nice accent. Just one small pillow. He has been in the mode lately that no matter what I suggest - the answer is no - so that will probably be the answer again anyway. In my next post I'll show you the poster and the other fabric.

As I was searching online for some whippet print fabric I stumbled across a collection of whimsical and fun fabrics. I'm thinking I need some - now ...

They were designed by Emily Bond. Let's take a look ...

Emily has a whole line of items she makes. Cushions, dog beds, hot water bottle covers, tea towels, and more. I also found some items that someone makes and sells on Ebay.

Modern Childish Home - Take A Peek At The Unexpected That Waits Inside!

Yesterday I went on a home tour with my mom. I have to share some photo's with you of one of my favorites. This home's space planning was perfection - they took huge risks in their decorating choices. You just felt this family's fun and happiness the moment you stepped inside.

Let's get started!

The traditional exterior of this 1997 built Tudor style home. Impeccable landscaping!

The foyer - That is the front door which leads into the spacious and whimsical foyer. Ugly dolls line two walls floor to ceiling, and the oversize ottoman is the perfect spot to take off your shoes.

A colorful dining room is to the left of the foyer. Bright green damask wallpaper and a brightly painted chandelier add to the fun.

This room is off the right side of the foyer. They call it their fine arts studio. The art table is their old dining table which they cut down to kid height. The floor is made from a high gloss black epoxy and has been splattered with silver metallic paint. I really LOVED this space! From the green piano to the traditional walls with the modern floor. A kid friendly super creative space!

The kitchen sits just behind the dining room. I really liked the repetition of the Keep Calm posters in multiple colors. I also thought the barstools were the perfect shade of green - so well made - gorgeous tufted backs. I'd love to serve my kids breakfast there!

The family room is at the back of the house, and to the right of the kitchen. In the left far corner they have an outdoor Florida type room dining area. The family room was just so comfortable. The large sofa faces beautiful built in's, television, and fireplace.

The master bedroom was beautifully neutral. It had a family photo gallery, and some guitars hanging on the wall.

Right outside of the master is this little deck with a firepit. Great idea!

Lastly I have to show you their sons room. I love the use of color. What a fun place to grow up!!!

I like how they have a couple things we are putting into Noah's room. He will also have one large chalkboard wall, and we are hanging his guitars. It was fun to see both ideas somewhere else.

I hope you enjoyed this house! I love how they took risks, love how family friendly the entire space was, love their wide hallways.

Framing A Very Likable Quote

This Summer I repainted our hall to the walkout, and also switched around some of the frames and things I had hanging there.

I had been wanting to add a quote, so when Noah came home from basketball camp and this quote was on the bottom on the coach's note I knew it was the one!

I had the hardest time getting clear photo's of this.

The quote:

There is a choice you have to make in everything you do. And you must always keep in mind the choice you make, makes you.

I love it - I just have to hope my boys really read it and think about it!

I also had this glitter circle hanging around - I just added some numbers that meant something to our family and then highlighted them by placing the circle around them. I recently saw this circle in clear too which would also be very nice to use.

Here is how you can make your own framed quote:

First, print out any quote on plain paper.

You will probably have to play around with sizing and spacing until you have it just the way you want it for your frame and paper.

I used a font called albemarle swash.

At first I thought I would print the quote on an old dictionary page, but as you can see below - that came out way to busy.

Next idea, sheet music! Thankfully that worked!

Step 2 is just to take your white piece of paper with the quote on it, and hold your sheet music on top. Hold the paper up to either a lightbulb or just the outdoor light from your window. Doing this will show you where you need to place your sheet music so that your quote prints out where you want it to.

When you have everything lined up the way you want it use a glue stick to adhere the sheet music to your printer paper. You are going to send both sheets through the printer together. Really, just make sure the top of your sheet music is secured so that when the sheets go through your printer they won't separate. You can add a little glue to the sides as well for a little more peace of mind.

Add any kind of embellishment you want - this glitter frame is from Making Memories.

Lastly, add it to a frame. This frame is from Michaels, but has been discontinued. They have a new frame that is kind of similar though.

I still have a couple more frames to add to the wall and then I will post that area - and my new paint color which is subtle and I just love it!

Peanut Butter Sauce for Chicken or Shrimp

Super easy and delicious savory sauce!

You can use the peanut butter sauce when you grill, broil, or even pan fry your poultry or seafood. It works every time. Use as much or as little sauce as you wish. It is also good to leave a little on the side for dipping!

Savory Peanut Butter Sauce

1/3 c. creamy peanut butter

1/3 c. soy sauce

1/3 c. sugar

3 cloves garlic, minced

2 T. vegetable oil

1 T. water

1 1/2 pounds medium shrimp, shelled and deveined, or chicken cut into bite size pieces

Mix peanut butter and 2 T. soy sauce in saucepan. Blend in remaining soy sauce, sugar, garlic, oil and water; heat to dissolve sugar. Thread shrimp or chicken on a skewer and brush with peanut sauce. Grill or broil shrimp until cooked through (or even just panfry).

If desired, brush with more sauce before serving, or just place some on the side for dipping. Oh, and the lightly charred parts - yum!

Tried and True - Curried Couscous with Feta

This couscous is a pleaser, and one of our favorite recipes!

We make it to have around the house, we make it for parties, we make it for potlucks. It's just one of those dishes. The original recipe is from Ina Garten. Her's had raisins in it, and it's just a personal decision about the raisins - I just really only like them a few ways - right from the package, in oatmeal cookies, and in one salad recipe I have. I thought what this recipe really needed was some feta - we love it - hope you do too!

I will be back in a day or so to share another recipe to serve with the couscous. It's a peanut butter sauce that you can use on either chicken or shrimp. Both recipes taste really good together!

Curried Couscous With Feta

1 1/2 cups couscous

1 tablespoon unsalted butter

1 1/2 cups boiling water

1/4 cup plain yogurt

1/4 cup good olive oil

1 teaspoon white wine vinegar

1 teaspoon curry powder

1/4 teaspoon ground turmeric

1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt

1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1/2 cup small-diced carrots

1/2 cup minced fresh flat-leaf parsley

1/4 cup sliced almonds

2 scallions, thinly sliced (white and green parts)

1/4 cup small-diced red onion

Feta Cheese

Place the couscous in a medium bowl. Melt the butter in the boiling water and pour over the couscous. Cover tightly and allow the couscous to soak for 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork.

Whisk together the yogurt, olive oil, vinegar, curry, turmeric, salt, and pepper. Pour over the fluffed couscous, and mix well with a fork. Add the carrots, parsley, almonds, scallions, and red onions, mix well, and season to taste. Toss in however much Feta you would like, stir, and serve at room temperature.

I needed a little break, but I'll be back soon.

In the meantime we have been enjoying and will be enjoying the Woodward Dream Cruise!

The Woodward Dream Cruise takes place on Woodward Avenue, and was started 17 years ago as a way to raise funds for a soccer field. The creators probably could have never imagined what it would become! The first year 250,000 people showed up and now 1.5 million people attend. There are around 40,000 classic cars, and the people and cars come from around the globe.

Cars cruise up and down a 16 mile stretch of Woodward - recreating days of the past. In the 50's and 60's it was very common for people to take out their motor city metal, turn on the tunes, and cruise this very street.

The Woodward Dream Cruise is supposedly the largest one day auto event, but if you are from here you know that it really starts at the beginning of the week. We have already been out cruising the last two nights, and are meeting friends there tonight as well. Tonight we are just going to take a picnic basket of food, buy some sliders, and be watching. It's really nice to have such a unique event so close to home. Growing up in "The Motor City" along with my dad's company doing lots of work for the automotive companies; cars have always been something our family has been really aware of. I really love the cars from the late 60's - the Camaro Rally Sport being my favorite! I also have another type of favorite - I'll have to try and get some photo's! Lets just say I saw one the other night - think lavender and really fancy rims - lots of bling!

Sometimes you run across a great idea when you least expect to.

Like this tabletop!

Can you guess what it is made from?

I figured it out before I got home so like the dork I am I had to call my sister on my way home just to let her know what I came up with (not that she was thinking about it at all).

So - the table is made out of Galvanized Industrial Stair Treads. The stairs themselves come 30 by 10 inches. The first I found online were from McNichols.com and they call them the Perf-O Grip tread.

I wanted to use this idea to make a desk for J's room, but like most everything lately concerning anything for his room the answer was no. I thought that instead of making a square table I would just make it really long - top with plexi - and then he could slip things that were special to him under the plexi. We even have Uncle Scott's skills as a welder - but no go! Now I am imagining them being used as wall shelves. Attach them to some brackets and they are ready to go. I really want to use the shelf idea somewhere. So easy and unique!

A Great Dear Lillie Project

Did you happen to see the Burlap vase tutorial on Dear Lillie last week ...

I ended up making a couple.

I was afraid I would make nothing but a mess, but they both turned out pretty well.

I couldn't find our Sharpie so I used a fabric marker that I had on hand.

I also found a font I liked, typed out the names I wanted to write, and then enlarged them on my computer screen. I needed some kind of guide.

I then just sat in front of the computer and tried my best to replicate it!

I am too picky so when I look at the one I made for us I think - Oh, I should have made the J larger or simpler ... I know I'll probably remake it because it will bug me. Oh, why can't I just let it go?

On Saturday my friend Karen gave me this beautiful bunch of Annabelle Hydrangeas from her garden.

They are so delicate and I love seeing them each time I'm in the kitchen!

That's also the reason I became inspired to make a wrap with Josh and Noah's names.

Noah's name wraps around the back of the vase.

I am very happy with how nice his name came out! Success!

This is the wrap I made for friends. They have two adorable little girls, and since I am surrounded by boys I decided I had to use pink embroidery floss to secure it to the vase.

This photo has so many elements I like all in one room! The new ooh-la-la arm chair, ruffle ring items, cloverleaf sheets, and their vintage mirror!

OK - in this photo I adore the paint color paired with the gray desk and that painted Banker's chair. I went to an Estate Sale the other morning and intended on buying two of their Bankers Chair's. While there I decided that maybe I already had too many projects so I left them. This photo just reinforces why I wanted them. Hopefully I will find more at another time. I also LOVE the drapes. They are the Ruffle Rings Drapes paired with the Flower Applique Sheer. I think this drape combination will be finding it's way into my house. Maybe for our office!

Lastly, I thought this was just a nice and eclectic little lamp.
